Replace experienced trauma with truth
Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2022

For many people of faith, it is difficult to find help for the pain of traumas. Head knowledge of good and evil is generally shallow once one has experienced the results of sin in the world. In this devotional book, one is not only given a passage of scripture to read and meditate upon, one is given a magnifying glass to see how evil begets trauma and how the traumatized is dearly loved by a God who wants to heal that trauma. Bringing the reader to the Truth of redemption through Jesus and the expectation of obedience to word of God, Kathy helps the traumatized realize that evil does not have to win.
A good counselor helps the patient determine what actions and thoughts can help them heal. Neither the patient or the counselor can change the problem, however the counselor may help the patient change themselves. These devotionals encourage the reader to change their thinking and reactions of trauma. Bringing the reader to scripture and the promises of healing, these devotions are helpful to those with broken-hearts.

(Psalm 9:1)

Healing Hearts: A Journey in the Midst of Spiritual Adversity is the remarkable story of many emotionally painful and traumatic experiences from author Kathy Shelton’s life, telling how the Lord Jesus Christ healed deep places of emotional and spiritual wounds in her heart so that she could then help others. It was written to encourage those who have undergone painful and traumatic situations and let them know that there is healing and freedom available through the love of Jesus Christ. Healing Hearts is also intended to be a resource for and inspiration to those who are currently serving the Lord or who are considering becoming involved in inner healing ministry.

“Our spiritual growth is often blocked by unhealed emotional and spiritual wounds. Most of us have been unaware of the effect that the painful and traumatic events in our lives have had on us and our ability to grow in the Lord. … Unless healing occurs for the pain that has been stuffed, we may struggle for years and sometimes our entire life in our walk with God.

“Spiritual maturity is a process. It is not something that occurs automatically the moment after we ask Jesus into our lives. Oh, if it were just that simple! In James 1:4, we are instructed to become mature and complete, not lacking anything. … We must pursue spiritual maturity.”

One of my favorite chapters in this book is on rest.
August 7, 2014
Format: Hardcover
While reading this book I could clearly see the stories Kathy wrote about. I was able to put myself in her shoes in so many of the testimonies she shared. Having served in ministry for 20 years myself, one of my favorite chapters in this book is on rest. Many times in ministry we forget to take the time to care for ourselves, to see that in order for us to care well for others we must care for our own temples. It was a great reminder-especially in the area of healing ministry. So many things in here provide insight and help to those seeking healing or longing to be a tool for Him to work through.

Years of listening to people’s insides coalesce into an easy-to-read book, that is full of common sense, wisdom, compassion and insight. Each person can find themselves somewhere in its pages, and benefit. Inner pain is not to be endured, but released; and the reader is encouraged to find help to do this, when needed. Encouraging testimonies, including Kathy’s own transparent life, dot the pages. Highly recommend.

Seasons of Healing

Jesus can lead us through seasons of healing from past emotional pain and trauma if we will let Him. Rarely does He release all the past pain and trauma at one time. The emotional healing He provides usually occurs in different seasons of our life.

Seasons of healing can last days, weeks, months, or even years. The important thing is that you enter the season trusting the Lord to lead you through it. You must have the courage to enter or re-enter the healing process whenever He directs you to do so.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths.
Proverbs 3:5-6

Sometimes a season of healing begins spontaneously without us doing anything to initiate it. Emotional pain from the past can be, and often is, triggered and comes up as the result of current painful or traumatic situations. When that happens, we need to trust that the Lord knows the perfect time for healing of an area of emotional pain and trauma and follow His guidance to pursue freedom.

We should pray as Jeremiah prayed in Jeremiah 17:14, "Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved, for You are my praise." However, we also need to realize that the healing of emotional pain and trauma can be a painful process, especially if you have experienced serious emotional trauma or a lot of it over a long period of time.

We must enter seasons of healing with this realization that we may experience pain during the process. Just as healing from physical surgery, illnesses, or accidents normally involves pain, healing from emotional pain and trauma is a journey that includes good days and difficult ones. Don't expect the healing journey to be a piece of cake.

If you fell into a cactus plant, and needles were lodged in your body, there most certainly would be pain involved in their removal. We are blessed as followers of Jesus that He can apply supernatural anesthesia during the healing process and minimize or eliminate the pain  of the process completely as He releases the original emotional pain and trauma.

The end result of going through seasons of healing is worth whatever the journey may require. Be diligent and wise in seeking help from a Christian counselor or prayer minister if you need more than prayer from a family member or friend. Always give God praise and thanks for the freedom and healing He provides every step of the way. Thankfulness increases joy and they are both essential in the healing process.

I will praise You, O Lord,
with my whole heart;
I will tell of all Your marvelous works. Psalm 9:1

Another very important aspect of completing the journey through seasons of healing is waiting with hope. When we see a rose bud that has not yet opened, we wait with hope that it will someday be a beautiful flower. Waiting on the Lord and His perfect timing for the seasons of healing in your life to be accomplished brings freedom in and of itself. It brings freedom from fear and hopelessness.

I would have lost heart,
unless I had believed
That I would see the goodness
of the Lord
In the land of the living.
Wait on the Lord;
Be of good courage,
And He shall strengthen your heart;
Wait, I say, on the Lord!
Psalm 27:13-14

Our prayer for you is that you will face the emotional pain and trauma as the Lord leads you into your seasons of healing and that Jesus will release that pain and trauma so that you can blossom into all He has planned for your life.

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:11

HBH Seminars and Workshops

Healing the Brokenhearted (HBH) Ministry seminars and workshops are a wonderful way to get the word out regarding the need for inner healing. We have been doing HBH seminars and workshops since 2009. They have been very powerful, impacting all who have attended in positive ways.

There are several differences between the HBH seminars and workshops that we have done.

Workshops are done in one or two sessions and last between three hours  and all day, each session beginning with a time of worship. Kathy ministers to the group after sharing her testimony and doing a short teaching about inner healing.

The goal of a workshop is to educate people about the need for inner healing and the availability of freedom from emotional pain and trauma through Jesus Christ.  It is not a substitute for personal ministry, but allows a person to experience a certain level of relief to encourage them to pursue further inner healing if necessary.

A seminar includes four or five sessions held over a two-day period and provides much more information regarding the HBH Ministry method of inner healing.  The goal of the seminar is once again to educate regarding the need for inner healing, but also to allow those who attend to have more information if they are considering entering HBH training opportunities.

There is a registration process for the seminars and workshops which includes a registration fee, and attendance is normally limited to a pre-determined number of people.

We are willing to come to your church, fellowship, or small group,
and can do either an HBH seminar or a workshop depending on your need.
If you are interested, send us an email,
and we will be glad to give you more information.

What in the World is Going on With Me?

Have you ever asked yourself that question?  You love the Lord Jesus and have asked Him into your life, but something is blocking you from receiving freedom from old habits and ungodly reactions to things.

Many times, but not always, the sin that we continue to battle in our lives is the result of past emotional pain and trauma that are festering beneath the surface.  If you find yourself repeatedly "going around the same mountains," this may be the reason.

Addiction to drugs, alcohol, sex, pornography, gambling, food, prescription medications, cutting oneself, or any other thing may be the result of emotional pain and trauma from the past or present.

Trauma includes the death of a loved one, divorce, abuse of any kind (sexual, mental, verbal, emotional, spiritual or physical), repeatedly moving from one location to another (especially during childhood), natural disasters (fires, floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc.), and anything else that is extremely upsetting to the normal life circumstance.

As painful memories from past events are triggered and come to the surface, the associated emotional, mental, or physical pain may be intense.  In an attempt to numb or deaden that pain, you may have one, two, three, or more drinks, use drugs, or in some other way try to relieve or remove that pain.  It may work for a short time because the activity changes the chemical balance in your brain.  However, it is not a permanent solution and the unbearable emotional, mental, spiritual or physical pain eventually surfaces again.  The cycle of numbing the pain, it reappearing, and numbing it again can lead to full-blown addiction.

Does this sound familiar?  If so, the good news is that there is hope!  Many people have received freedom from ungodly behavior, sin, and addictions through inner healing prayer ministry. Jesus Christ came to set the captives free, but sometimes it requires a person, "Jesus with skin on," to help in the process.
This is what the Healing the Brokenhearted Ministry is about, helping to set people free from the pain and trauma that keeps them bound to sin and ungodly behavior.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT

ALL FOR JESUS MINISTRIES

“The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon Me,
 Because the LORD has anointed Me
  To preach good tidings to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives,
 And the opening of the prison
to those who are bound;”
Isaiah 61:1

Isaiah 61:1 was the Mission Statement of Jesus Christ, which He quoted and announced in Luke 4:18-21.

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me
To preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set at liberty those who are oppressed;
To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”

Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him. And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”  Luke 4:18-21

This is the Mission Statement of All for Jesus Ministries as well.

Our mission is to minister the love of Jesus Christ to the brokenhearted, the spiritually oppressed, those needing physical healing, and the unsaved.

 We are also called to mentor, disciple, and train others who are then better equipped to fulfill this mission for the Lord Jesus Christ wherever and whenever He gives them the opportunity to do so.

WHAT WE BELIEVE

ALL FOR JESUS MINISTRIES

STATEMENT OF FAITH

WE BELIEVE that the Holy Bible is the Word of God, without error in its original manuscripts. The Holy Bible was verbally and totally inspired by God and is our supreme and final authority in faith and life (2 Tim. 3:16; 2 Peter 1:20-21).

WE BELIEVE in one, living and true God eternally existing in three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, equal in power and glory (Gen. 1:1, 26; Matt. 28:19; John 1:1-3; John 10:30).

JESUS IS THE SON OF GOD!

WE BELIEVE in the deity of Jesus Christ, the Son of God (Mark 1:10-11), His virgin birth (Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:23), His sinless life (Hebrews 4:15; Hebrews 7:26), His miracles (John 2:11), His atoning  death (1 Corinthians 15:3; Hebrews 2:9), His  resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:4) and His ascension to the right hand of the Father (Mark 16:19).

WE BELIEVE that Jesus Christ, of his own volition, came into the world in order that whoever believes in His sacrificial death might have eternal life (John 3:16-18).  He was conceived by the Holy Spirit (Matthew 1:20; Luke 1:35).  We acknowledge Jesus Christ as Lord over all things (Romans 9:5; Revelation 19:16).

WE BELIEVE that the Lord Jesus Christ died for our sins and was raised from the dead according to the Scriptures as a representative and substitutionary sacrifice, and that all who believe in Him are justified on the grounds of His shed blood.  The blood of Jesus Christ is the sole covering and payment for our sins.  Salvation is a free gift that is offered by God to sinful man. (Isaiah 53; Matthew 20:28; John 3:16; Romans 3:24; Romans 5:1; 1 Corinthians 15:3; 2 Corinthians 5:21; 1 John 2:2)

WE BELIEVE in the personal return of our Lord Jesus Christ; first for his saints and then with his saints to rule and reign over the earth (Acts 1:11; 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17).

WE BELIEVE that all who come by grace through faith to the Lord Jesus Christ are born of the Holy Spirit, made alive spiritually, and thereby become adopted children of God.  It is God's intention that all who are so born from above are to yield themselves to complete obedience to His Lordship. (John 1:12-14; John 3:3,5; 1 Peter 1:23; Ephesians 2:8-9; Colossians 2:12-14; 1 Thessalonians 5:23)

WE BELIEVE that the Holy Spirit indwells every Believer in Jesus Christ and that He is an abiding Helper, Teacher, and Guide (John 14:16-17).

WE BELIEVE in the contemporary operation of the gifts of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:1-11).

WE BELIEVE in a literal heaven and a literal hell (Matthew 5:3; Revelation 20:14-15).

The Holidays

What a blessing it is to get together with family and friends during Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, New Years, birthdays and other times of celebration.  However, these times can also be very emotionally painful for many people.

When emotional pain or trauma from the past is "triggered" during the holidays, it can be extremely difficult for those who are unknowingly carrying that pain.  They may not realize that their reaction to Aunt Suzie or Uncle Harry is really partially the result of past pain that has been buried and is now coming to the surface.

An example of emotional pain from the past being triggered after over six decades was related to Kathy by one of her ministry recipients several years ago.  This woman, Betty (not her real name), had been married for over 50 years when she asked her husband to go to the store for her to buy a jar of pickles.  Betty told him the type and brand of pickles that she wanted, but when he returned home, he had a jar of generic pickles that was not even the type that she had requested.

Well, this woman who was in her seventies said that she went into a rage!  However, Betty also had some knowledge about inner emotional wounds and quickly realized that her reaction had very little to do with the pickles.  So, she asked the Lord what was going on with her, and He revealed the root of her emotional outburst.  When Betty was a child, her family was very poor and her mother only bought things that were the least expensive.  If her mother came home with anything that was not the cheapest item, this woman's father went into a rage.  The pain and trauma that surfaced when Betty's husband came home with the generic pickles had been stuffed for over 60 years!

PRAISE THE LORD!  Betty received the healing and freedom that she needed from this past emotional pain and trauma through Jesus Christ.  You can also receive the same healing and freedom if you will pursue it with a qualified, trained Christian minister.  Healing the Brokenhearted Ministry is one type of inner healing ministry meant to help people get set free and healed from emotional, spiritual, and physical pain and trauma.

Trauma

Do you understand trauma and its effects?

Many people believe that trauma is something that is experienced in extreme cases like being in the Twin Towers on 9/11.  However, we have all gone through traumatic situations in our lives to one degree or another.

Trauma includes but is not limited to physical abuse, spiritual abuse, emotional abuse, mental abuse, verbal abuse, molestation, rape, death of a loved one, divorce, accidents, and natural disasters.

Depending on our childhood and how our brains developed, we can react to trauma in very different ways.  Someone that had a nurturing and stable childhood and has experienced a small amount of trauma in their life's journey may be able to survive and recover from much higher levels of trauma without serious, lingering painful effects as opposed to someone who has had a more unstable and traumatic life.

Current traumatic situations can and often do bring the emotional pain of similar past traumatic experiences to the surface. Since we do not know what they have endured in the past, we should never judge a person's reactions to situations in their lives.

  • Trauma is energy.  It comes at you like a blow to a bone.  That bone can receive a hair-line fracture, a splintering, a complete break or several breaks depending on the force behind the blow.  Emotional and spiritual trauma have a similar effect on our hearts, minds, and spirits.

  • Trauma that does not receive healing will steadily distract our focus and drain our energy away from reaching our God-given destiny.  The pain from trauma will fester and eventually erupt like a volcano if it is not released and healed.

Jesus Christ can release and heal your emotional and spiritual pain
and trauma from the past!  The Healing the Brokenhearted
Ministry includes prayers that help do just that.

SECONDARY TRAUMA

Secondary trauma is trauma that happened to someone else that you heard about or saw, but did not directly involve you.

Secondary trauma can have a significant impact on our hearts and spirits even though we did not experience the traumatic event first-hand.

  • Ministers, counselors, mental health professionals, police officers, firefighters, and people in many other professions that deal with the public can carry extreme and sometimes debilitating amounts of secondary pain and trauma!

A lady that attended one of our previous seminars told Kathy that she had to stop counseling due to the secondary pain and trauma that had built up in her! She had been a licensed counselor for many years.

    This secondary trauma can also be released and the ministry recipient can be set free through prayer during the Healing the Brokenhearted Ministry.

PRAISE THE LORD!
